Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) Services: Get Recommended by AI

Your next customer is asking ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Perplexity who to hire, what to buy and where to start. Generative engine optimization decides whether your name is in the answer. We have been doing SEO since day one. GEO is that same craft, pointed at a new surface.

What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of earning a place inside the answers that AI systems write: being named, cited and recommended when someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity or Google’s AI Mode who to buy from, what to choose or how to solve a problem in your category.

Traditional SEO earns a ranking and a click. GEO earns a mention inside the answer itself, often before the person visits any website. That changes what you optimize for: not only pages and keywords, but your brand as an entity, the facts about you across the web and what other credible sources say about you.

You will also hear GEO called AI search optimization, LLM optimization or, for the narrower job of winning a direct answer, answer engine optimization (AEO). The labels overlap and the fundamentals are shared with SEO. What is genuinely new is the emphasis on entities, third-party authority and measurement across several AI platforms.

GEO vs SEO, and is “AI SEO” any different?

GEO (generative engine optimization), AI SEO and LLM SEO describe the same goal: getting your brand mentioned, cited and recommended in AI-generated answers. It builds on SEO fundamentals and adds a focus on entities, third-party authority and prompts.

“AI SEO” is searched about twelve thousand times a month, and “generative engine optimization” almost ten thousand, so it is worth being clear. People use the terms for overlapping things: using AI tools to do SEO, and optimizing for AI search. This page is about the second one.

GEO and SEO share foundations: crawlable pages, clear content, trust and authority. They differ in what you are trying to win. SEO wins a position in a list of results. GEO wins a place in a generated answer, which often names a few brands and cites a few sources. That makes third-party mentions, consistent brand facts and being easy to quote more important than they were.

If you have strong SEO, you have a head start. If you do not, the fastest way to improve AI visibility is usually the same as the fastest way to improve search visibility. See our SEO services for the foundation.

SEO, AEO, GEO and AISO: what is the difference?

The labels overlap, and the fundamentals are shared. This is how we draw the lines.

How generative engines decide who to recommend

Nobody outside the labs has the full recipe, and we won’t pretend otherwise. What is consistently observed, and what each signal means for your brand:

  1. 01

    A clear entity

AI systems build answers from entities and their relationships: your brand, your products, your locations, your experts. If those are ambiguous or inconsistent, you get left out or described wrongly.

  2. 02

    Agreement across sources

When your site, your profiles, reviews, directories and press all say the same thing, systems trust it. Contradictions erode that trust.

  3. 03

    Third-party authority

Mentions in reputable publications, industry lists, review platforms and communities act as independent votes. They are often what separates a brand that gets named from one that doesn’t.

  4. 04

    Content that answers the prompt

Pages that state facts plainly, cover the follow-up questions and show real expertise are easier to retrieve and quote.

  5. 05

    Being retrievable

Crawlable, fast, indexable pages with the key facts in text, not locked in images or scripts. Google’s guidance on this is explicit, and the other engines behave similarly.

  6. 06

    Freshness and accuracy

Current prices, specs, hours and claims. Out-of-date facts are a common reason AI answers get brands wrong.

What our GEO services include

A GEO program is part audit, part content, part reputation and part measurement. These are the pieces.

  • 01

    AI visibility audit

We test a library of the prompts your buyers actually use across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Google, and record who is named, who is cited and what is said about you.

  • 02

    Prompt and topic research

We map the questions and comparisons that lead to your category: “best”, “vs”, “for [industry]”, “how to choose”, and prioritize the ones that matter to revenue.

  • 03

    Entity and brand-fact cleanup

One accurate, consistent description of who you are, what you do and who you serve, across your site, profiles and the sources AI relies on.

  • 04

    Third-party citation plan

Digital PR, expert commentary, industry lists, review platforms and communities that build the independent mentions AI engines weigh.

  • 05

    Content built for prompts

Comparison pages, buyer guides, evidence-backed explainers and FAQs that answer the way AI quotes: directly, specifically and with sources.

  • 06

    Technical access

Crawlability, rendering and bot access decisions for AI crawlers such as GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended, made deliberately rather than by default.

  • 07

    Accuracy monitoring

When an AI answer gets your pricing, services or reputation wrong, we trace the source and fix it.

  • 08

    Measurement and reporting

Share of voice across a tracked prompt set, citations, sentiment, AI referral traffic and conversions, reported monthly.

How to show up in ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and AI Overviews

Be the kind of source AI systems trust: clear, factual pages that answer real questions, consistent brand facts everywhere, mentions on respected third-party sites, and technical access for the crawlers that feed them.

Searches like “how to rank in ChatGPT” and “how to show up in AI Overviews” are growing quickly. The honest answer is that there is no switch to flip, and nobody can promise a mention. What we can do is improve the odds and measure the result:

  • Build topical authoritythorough, accurate content on the questions your customers ask about your category.
  • Get mentioned elsewherereviews, comparison pages, industry publications, directories and communities where AI systems look for evidence.
  • Make your facts consistentyour name, offer, pricing approach, location and credentials should read the same everywhere.
  • Be quotableshort, specific, well-structured statements that can be lifted into an answer.
  • Allow accessmake sure the crawlers and search systems you want to reach can read your pages, and understand what your robots settings do.
  • Check what the systems say todayask the questions your buyers ask, record the answers, and look for errors, gaps and competitors.

One strategy, several platforms

Most of what earns a mention helps everywhere. The platforms differ in what they cite and how they search, so we measure each one separately.

  • Google AI Overviews and AI Mode

Built on Google’s index and ranking systems. Pages must be crawlable, indexed and eligible for a snippet. Traffic is reported inside Search Console.

  • ChatGPT

Answers from training data and, when it searches, from the live web. Third-party mentions and clear, citable pages carry weight.

  • Gemini

Google’s assistant. It leans on the same web and entity signals as Search, so classic SEO fundamentals carry straight over.

  • Claude

Draws on training data and web search where enabled. Plain-language pages and demonstrated expertise help it describe you accurately.

  • Perplexity

Always shows its sources, which makes citation tracking unusually direct. Fresh, well-structured pages get picked up quickly.

  • Microsoft Copilot and Meta AI

Bing’s index powers Copilot. Meta AI surfaces answers across Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. Both reward consistent brand facts.

What we won’t do

  • We don’t sell magic files or markup.Google says no special schema, AI file or markup is needed to appear in its AI features. We test a claim before we repeat it.
  • We don’t promise a mention.AI answers vary by prompt, by day and by platform. We promise the work, the measurement and honest reporting.
  • We don’t rename SEO and invoice it twice. The fundamentals are shared. You pay once for the foundation and once for the work that is genuinely new.
  • We don’t publish content that doesn’t help a person. If a page wouldn’t earn a citation from a thoughtful human editor, it won’t earn one from a machine.

Our GEO process

We start by finding out where you actually stand.

  1. 01

    Baseline

Run the prompt library across platforms and capture mentions, citations, sentiment and gaps against your competitors.

  2. 02

    Fix the facts

Make your entity and brand facts consistent, correct and easy to retrieve.

  3. 03

    Build authority

Earn the third-party mentions and citations that move recommendations.

  4. 04

    Publish for prompts

Create and improve the content that answers the questions that lead to you.

  5. 05

    Track and correct

Re-run the prompts on a schedule, watch what changes and correct inaccuracies.

Why Growth Rocket for GEO

A lot of GEO offers are SEO with a new label. Ours starts from the fundamentals and is open about the unknowns.

  1. 01

    SEO day ones

We have adapted through every algorithm update and search product cycle. We know which parts of GEO are new and which are the same craft.

  2. 02

    We build with these models

We design and run AI applications ourselves, so we see how these systems retrieve and answer, not just how they are described.

  3. 03

One team across search, content and development

Brand facts, content, technical access and measurement are handled together instead of across three vendors.

  4. 04

    Measurement you can read

Tracked prompts, repeated sampling and plain-English reporting, because AI answers vary and one screenshot proves nothing.

  5. 05

    Honest scope

We separate what Google documents, what is widely observed and what is guesswork.

Certified, and kept current

How to choose a GEO or AI SEO agency: six questions to ask

Every SEO agency has suddenly added AI to its services page. Here is how to tell the real ones apart.

We answer every one of these on a first call.

  1. What exactly will you do that classic SEO does not?

Look for specifics: entity and fact consistency, third-party authority, prompt-based tracking, and AI-specific reporting.

  2. How do you measure whether it is working?

Look for a repeatable set of prompts, tracked over time across several AI tools, plus AI referral traffic and branded demand.

  3. What claims do you make about schema or llms.txt files?

Google says no special schema or file is needed for its AI features. Ask how they test before making claims.

  4. How do you handle third-party mentions?

The answer should involve earning coverage and reviews on real sites, not buying placements.

  5. What will you tell us when it is not working?

Reporting should include negative findings and what you are doing about them.

  6. Is this additional to SEO or instead of it?

It builds on it. Be wary of anyone who says SEO no longer matters.

GEO mistakes we fix

This field is new enough that the same errors keep repeating.

  • Treating one ChatGPT screenshot as proofWe sample a library of prompts repeatedly across platforms, because AI answers vary.
  • Publishing generic AI-written fillerWe publish specific, evidenced content with real expertise behind it. Filler gets ignored by people and machines alike.
  • Ignoring third-party mentionsWe build the independent coverage, reviews and listings that AI engines weigh heavily.
  • Leaving outdated facts on the webWe find and fix old pricing, services and descriptions across the sources AI relies on.
  • Blocking AI crawlers by accident, or allowing them by defaultWe make a deliberate decision for each crawler based on your business.
  • Optimizing for one platformMost work helps everywhere, but each platform cites differently, so we measure each one.

Why a GEO program starts with an audit of what AI says about you

AI tools may already describe your brand, sometimes wrongly. An audit finds out what they say, which sources they use and where competitors are recommended instead, so the work targets real gaps.

Before changing anything, we ask the questions your customers ask, across the major AI tools, and record the answers. We check whether you are named, whether the details are right, which sources are cited and who else is recommended. We repeat it on a schedule, because answers change.

That gives us a baseline and a plan: the pages to improve, the facts to correct, the third-party sources to earn and the prompts worth tracking. It also gives you something honest to report on, instead of a promise.

GEO: frequently asked questions

What are generative engine optimization services?

Generative engine optimization services help your brand get named, cited and recommended in AI-generated answers. They typically include an AI visibility audit, prompt research, entity and brand-fact cleanup, third-party citation building, content for prompts, technical access and ongoing measurement.

Is GEO the same as AEO?

They overlap heavily. AEO is about being the direct answer to a specific question, such as in a snippet or AI Overview. GEO is about being named and recommended in longer, AI-generated responses across platforms like ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini. We often run them together. See AEO.

Will GEO work hurt my existing SEO?

No. Most of the work, such as clear content, accurate facts and credible mentions, helps classic SEO too. We plan both together so the foundation is shared.

Do we need new content, or can you work with what we have?

Usually both. We start by improving the pages that already rank or convert, then add the comparison and answer pages the audit shows you are missing.

How do you measure GEO?

We track a library of buyer prompts across platforms, measure how often you are named and cited versus competitors, review sentiment and accuracy, and tie AI referral traffic and conversions in analytics. The AI search optimization page explains the reporting.

How long does GEO take to show results?

Fixes to facts and technical access can change answers within weeks. Authority and citation building usually takes a few months. Training-data-driven answers change more slowly than answers that use live search.

Does GEO work for local and ecommerce businesses?

Yes. Local businesses depend on accurate listings and reviews. Stores depend on complete product data and third-party reviews. See local SEO and ecommerce SEO.

Which AI platforms do you optimize for?

Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Meta AI. We choose where to focus based on where your buyers actually ask.

What is AI SEO?

The term is used for two things: using AI tools to do SEO work, and optimizing your brand to appear in AI-generated answers. Our GEO work is the second: making your brand visible, accurate and recommended in AI search.

How do I rank in ChatGPT?

You cannot rank in the usual sense, but you can improve your chances of being mentioned: be a trusted source on your topic, keep brand facts consistent, earn third-party mentions and reviews, and make your pages easy to quote. Then track what ChatGPT says over time.

How do I show up in Google AI Overviews?

The same fundamentals as normal Google Search apply: helpful, crawlable, indexed pages that are eligible to appear with a snippet. Google says no special optimization or markup is required.

Is generative engine optimization the future of digital marketing?

It is an important part of it. Many people now use AI tools for research, but search is not going away. The practical approach is to do both well, on a shared foundation.
