What is AI search optimization (AISO)?

AI search optimization (AISO) is the program of auditing, improving and measuring how a brand appears across AI search: Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Copilot. It combines SEO, AEO and GEO work with the tracking and reporting that show whether it is working.

The label isn’t standardized. Some providers use AISO as another word for GEO. We use it for the whole program: the readiness audit, the prompt tracking, the analytics setup and the monthly reporting that connect SEO, AEO and GEO to business results.

That measurement layer is the hard part. AI answers vary by prompt, platform and day, and the referral data in analytics is messy. We set it up so you are looking at trends you can trust, not screenshots.

What is AI visibility, and how do you measure it?

AI visibility is how often, how accurately and how favorably your brand appears in AI-generated answers. You measure it by tracking a fixed set of customer prompts across AI tools over time and recording mentions, citations, sentiment and competitors.

“AI visibility” and “AI search visibility” are now terms people search for, because the old dashboards do not show this. Rankings tell you where a page appears in a list. They tell you nothing about whether ChatGPT recommends you.

A usable measurement program has four parts: a prompt set (the questions your buyers actually ask), a schedule (answers change, so you check regularly), a scoring method (mentioned or not, accurate or not, cited or not, recommended or not) and a comparison against competitors. Layer on AI referral traffic from your analytics and branded search demand, and you have a picture you can act on.

We build that program for you, set the baseline and report on it each month, so the question “are we visible in AI search?” has a real answer. For the work that improves the numbers, see our GEO and AEO services.

SEO, AEO, GEO and AISO: what is the difference?

The labels overlap, and the fundamentals are shared. This is how we draw the lines.

Launch readiness: where does your brand sit?

Our AISO readiness check places you on a four-stage ladder, so the next move is obvious.

  1. 01

    On the pad

Not yet showing up. Technical or content gaps keep you out of AI answers, or AI describes you wrongly. First job: fix the foundation and the facts.

  2. 02

    Ignition

Appearing occasionally, mostly for branded queries. First job: build the prompt library, close content gaps and start earning citations.

  3. 03

    In flight

Named regularly for core topics, with room to win comparison and “best” queries. First job: authority, third-party mentions and conversion tracking.

  4. 04

    Orbit

A consistent share of AI answers in your category. First job: defend it, monitor accuracy and expand into new topics and markets.

Alerts when AI answers misstate your offer, show outdated information or recommend a competitor for a core query.

  • 08

    Executive reporting

A monthly view that ties AI visibility to leads and revenue, written so a leadership team can act on it.

What are AI search optimization tools, and do you need one?

AI search optimization tools track how brands appear in AI answers. They can be useful for monitoring at scale, but they do not do the optimization for you, and their results should be checked against real answers.

A new category of software tracks brand mentions and citations across AI tools, and some SEO platforms now include AI visibility reports. They are worth considering once you have a clear prompt set and someone who will act on the findings.

What to watch for: tools differ in which AI systems they cover, how they sample answers, how they handle personalization and how they score results. Numbers from two tools rarely match. So we treat tool output as one input, spot-check it against real answers and keep a stable prompt set so trends are comparable over time.

We are tool-agnostic. We will use whatever suits your budget and needs, or build lightweight tracking when that is enough.

The platforms we track

Each platform answers differently, so each gets its own line in your report.

  • Google AI Overviews and AI Mode

Built on Google’s index and ranking systems. Pages must be crawlable, indexed and eligible for a snippet. Traffic is reported inside Search Console.

  • ChatGPT

Answers from training data and, when it searches, from the live web. Third-party mentions and clear, citable pages carry weight.

  • Gemini

Google’s assistant. It leans on the same web and entity signals as Search, so classic SEO fundamentals carry straight over.

  • Claude

Draws on training data and web search where enabled. Plain-language pages and demonstrated expertise help it describe you accurately.

  • Perplexity

Always shows its sources, which makes citation tracking unusually direct. Fresh, well-structured pages get picked up quickly.

  • Microsoft Copilot and Meta AI

Bing’s index powers Copilot. Meta AI surfaces answers across Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. Both reward consistent brand facts.

What we won’t do

  • We don’t sell magic files or markup.Google says no special schema, AI file or markup is needed to appear in its AI features. We test a claim before we repeat it.
  • We don’t promise a mention.AI answers vary by prompt, by day and by platform. We promise the work, the measurement and honest reporting.
  • We don’t rename SEO and invoice it twice. The fundamentals are shared. You pay once for the foundation and once for the work that is genuinely new.
  • We don’t publish content that doesn’t help a person. If a page wouldn’t earn a citation from a thoughtful human editor, it won’t earn one from a machine.

How an AISO engagement runs

Start with a baseline, then run the loop every month.

  1. 01

    Readiness check

A fast read on where you sit on the launch-readiness ladder and what stands in the way.

  2. 02

    Full audit

Technical, content, entity, citation and measurement review with a prioritized fix list.

  3. 03

    Tracking setup

Prompt library, analytics segments and dashboards, so measurement works from day one.

  4. 04

    Execute

SEO, AEO and GEO workstreams run against the roadmap.

  5. 05

    Review monthly

We review the numbers with you, adjust the plan and report what changed.

Why Growth Rocket for AI search optimization

Measurement is where AI search programs usually fall apart. It is where we put the most care.

  1. 01

    Day-one SEOs

We know classic search measurement deeply, which makes it easier to tell real AI signals from noise.

  2. 02

    We build with AI

We design and run AI applications ourselves, including tools that read and summarize the web, so we know how this tooling behaves.

  3. 03

    Developers on the team

Analytics setup, technical access and structured data get implemented, not just recommended.

  4. 04

    Plain-English reporting

No mystery score. You see prompts, platforms, citations and outcomes.

  5. 05

    Honest about uncertainty

We tell you what the data can and can’t show.

Certified, and kept current

How to choose an AI search optimization partner: seven questions to ask

The category is new, and the claims are loud. These questions keep the conversation honest.

We answer every one of these on a first call.

  1. How will you track AI visibility?

Look for a defined prompt set, several AI tools, a regular schedule and clear scoring, not a one-off screenshot.

  2. Which AI surfaces do you cover?

AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Copilot all behave differently. Ask which ones they check and how.

  3. How do you separate signal from noise?

Responses vary. A good partner uses repeated sampling and stable prompts so trends mean something.

  4. What do you do beyond reporting?

Measurement is the start. Ask what changes they make as a result: content, facts, third-party authority and technical access.

  5. What will you not promise?

The right answer includes guaranteed mentions, magic files and instant results.

  6. How does this connect with our SEO?

It should be part of one plan. Ask how they share data with whoever runs your SEO.

  7. What will we own?

You should own the prompt sets, the data and the reports.

AISO mistakes we avoid

Measurement is where AI search programs most often go wrong.

  • Buying a score instead of a planEvery number we report links back to the prompts, platforms and sources behind it.
  • Trusting referral traffic aloneSome AI traffic arrives without a referrer. We combine analytics, Search Console and prompt tracking.
  • Tracking too many promptsWe focus on the prompts that map to revenue, so the signal isn’t buried.
  • Having no owner for brand factsWe create one approved description of your brand and a process to keep every source consistent.
  • Auditing once and stoppingAI answers change. We re-run the baseline on a schedule and report the trend.

How to adapt your SEO budget for AI search

Keep funding the SEO foundation, because AI answers draw on the same web. Then add a smaller allocation for AI-specific work: measurement, entity and fact consistency, third-party authority and answer-ready content.

Many teams ask whether they should move money from SEO to AI search. Our view: not yet, and not entirely. Classic search still drives the largest share of discovery and conversions for most businesses, and strong SEO is what makes AI visibility possible.

A sensible starting point is to keep your core SEO budget, carve out a measured portion for AI visibility work, and review it every quarter against what the data shows. If AI referrals and branded demand grow, shift more. If not, you have lost little and learned a lot.

We help you set that split with real numbers from your own analytics and your own prompt tracking, not a rule of thumb.

AISO: frequently asked questions

What is AI search optimization (AISO)?

AISO is the program of auditing, improving and measuring how a brand appears across AI search platforms. It combines SEO, AEO and GEO work with prompt tracking, analytics and reporting.

How is AISO different from GEO and AEO?

AEO and GEO are workstreams: winning direct answers and being recommended in AI-generated responses. AISO is the overall program, including the audit, tracking and reporting that tell you whether those workstreams are working. See the comparison table above.

What do I get from an AISO audit?

A readiness score on our launch-readiness ladder, a view of how AI platforms describe and cite you versus competitors, a technical and content review, and a prioritized roadmap across SEO, AEO and GEO.

How do you measure traffic from AI platforms?

We segment AI referrers in GA4, track Google’s AI features through Search Console’s Web performance report and monitor a prompt library over time. Some AI traffic arrives without a referrer, so we triangulate rather than rely on a single number.

Can you track what ChatGPT says about us?

Yes. We run your tracked prompts on a schedule, record mentions, citations and sentiment and flag changes. Because answers vary, we sample repeatedly and report trends.

Do we need special tools?

We use a mix of analytics, Search Console and prompt-tracking tooling and explain the method. You are not locked into a proprietary black box.

How long until we see improvement?

Tracking is useful from the first month. Visibility improvements typically start within a few months, depending on how much foundation work is needed.

Is AISO worth it for a small business?

Often yes, in a lighter form: a readiness check, correct brand facts and a small tracked prompt set. We scale the program to the size of the opportunity.

What is AI search optimization?

AI search optimization (AISO) is the program of measuring, improving and reporting your brand’s visibility across AI search surfaces, such as AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity, alongside classic search.

How do you track AI search visibility?

We track a fixed set of customer prompts across AI tools on a schedule, record whether and how you are mentioned, cited and recommended, compare against competitors, and combine it with AI referral traffic and branded demand.

Do I need an AI search tracking tool?

Not necessarily. Tools can help at scale, but the key is a stable prompt set and someone who acts on the findings. We use tools where they help and lightweight tracking where that is enough.

Should I shift my SEO budget to AI search?

Not entirely. Keep funding the SEO foundation, which AI answers draw on, and add a measured allocation for AI visibility work. Review it quarterly against your own data.
