Generative Engine Optimization: The New SEO Playbook
Key Takeaways Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) represents the next evolution in search strategy, requiring fundamentally different approaches than traditional SEO AI engines...
Josh EvoraWe have been doing search engine optimization since day one. Today that means winning the blue links, the AI Overview above them and the answer ChatGPT gives before anyone clicks anything. One team, one flight plan, built around customers and revenue, not rankings alone.
Search engine optimization (SEO) is the practice of making a website easy for search engines to find, understand and trust, so it earns more qualified visitors without paying for each click. It combines technical health, genuinely useful content and credible links, and it now reaches the AI answers that sit on top of search results.
Everything else in modern search, including GEO, AEO and AI search optimization, rests on the same foundation. If a page can’t be crawled, doesn’t answer the question or isn’t trusted, no new acronym will save it. That is why we start with SEO and build outward.
At the end of the day, all of this is still SEO. Google says as much about its own AI features: there are no additional requirements beyond being crawlable, indexed and eligible for a snippet. The difference is in how much of the work now happens beyond your own website.

A full SEO program covers technical health, on-page optimization, content, authority building, local and ecommerce needs where relevant, and measurement. The mix changes with your site; the categories do not.
“What is included in SEO services?” is one of the most common questions we hear, and the honest answer is that it depends on what is holding your site back. A brand-new site needs different work from a ten-year-old one with thousands of pages. Still, almost every engagement draws from the same six areas.
The labels overlap, and the fundamentals are shared. This is how we draw the lines.
| Discipline | Optimizing for | Where it shows up | Success looks like | Main levers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SEO | Rankings and qualified clicks | Google and Bing results, Maps, Shopping | More organic traffic, leads and revenue | Technical health, content, links, internal structure |
| AEO | Being the direct answer | Featured snippets, People Also Ask, AI Overviews, voice, chat answers | Answers lifted from your pages, branded demand | Answer-first content, entity and schema accuracy, question coverage |
| GEO | Being named and recommended by AI | ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, AI Mode, Copilot | Mentions, citations and AI referral traffic | Entities, third-party authority, prompt-led content, brand consistency |
| AISO | The whole AI-visibility program | Every AI surface plus classic search | A measured, improving share of AI answers | Audit, prompt tracking, AI referral analytics, reporting, brand-fact governance |
A full set of organic SEO services, from technical SEO to content and links, has more moving parts than most proposals admit. These are the ones we run, and who runs them.
We audit the site the way Google and AI crawlers see it: architecture, rendering, indexation, Core Web Vitals, structured data, redirects and migrations. Our developers ship the fixes.
We map what people actually search, in the words they use, to the pages that should win it, from the first question to the purchase.
Titles, headings, copy, internal links, schema and media on every priority page, written for the reader first and the crawler second.
Topic clusters, briefs and expert-written content that earns rankings and gets quoted. Our content team writes. Our SEOs edit.
Authority from real mentions: outreach, editorial links and PR. The same third-party signals feed the AI engines that decide who gets recommended.
Map-pack visibility for local businesses, plus category, product and feed optimization for online stores. See local SEO and ecommerce SEO.
GEO, AEO and AI search optimization built into the same plan, so you are cited as well as ranked, and you don’t pay twice for the same work.

Choose by what you need: an agency for a full team and a long-term program, a consultant for strategy and audits, a freelancer for a defined task, and in-house when SEO is central to the business and you can hire the range of skills it takes.
People search for “SEO agency”, “SEO company” and “SEO consultant” almost interchangeably, but the models are different. Knowing which you need saves months.
An SEO agency brings a team: a strategist, technical specialist, content people and an account lead. That breadth matters because SEO is several jobs, and almost no single person is great at all of them. A consultant gives you senior advice and a plan, which suits teams that can execute themselves. A freelancer is a good fit for a defined task, such as an audit or a set of articles. In-house works when search is core to the business, though most in-house SEOs still lean on outside specialists for technical work and links.
We are an agency by design, a boutique one: senior people do the work, you know their names, and when a project needs a specialist (a developer, a data analyst, a writer) they sit on the same team. We also sell advice-only engagements when that is what you need.
Every SEO engagement follows the same flight plan. The pace changes with your site and your goals. The order doesn’t.
We learn the business, the customers and the numbers that matter, then agree on what success looks like in leads and revenue.
A technical, content, link and AI-visibility audit that ends in a ranked list of fixes, not a 90-page PDF nobody opens.
A prioritized roadmap: quick wins in the first weeks, compounding work through the first quarters, owners and dates on every line.
Specialists in technical SEO, content and outreach ship the work, with developers on hand to deploy fixes so nothing dies in a backlog.
Monthly reporting tied to leads and revenue, and a standing review of what to double down on and what to stop.
Plenty of agencies sell SEO services. Here is what is different about ours.
We have worked through every major algorithm update since the early days. We have watched the patterns repeat, which is why we don’t chase them.
Most SEO agencies write recommendations. We have engineers who build on Magento, WordPress and custom stacks, so the work gets shipped.
Our organic and paid teams share data, which lowers the cost of acquisition on both.
SEO takes a few months to start compounding and we say so up front. No black boxes, no mystery metrics.

Searching for an SEO company returns thousands of options. These questions separate the real ones from the rest.
We are happy to answer every one of these on a first call.
Ask for names and roles. Many agencies sell with senior people and deliver with juniors. We tell you who is on your account and keep it stable.
The right answer is leads and revenue, not rankings alone. Ask what you will see each month and whether you get access to the raw data.
You should hear a specific plan: audit, fixes, content and links. Vague promises of “optimization” are a warning sign.
Ask for examples. Paid link schemes, private blog networks and mass directory submissions can get a site penalized. Earned mentions and genuine outreach are the safe route.
Ask for relevant case studies and numbers you can verify. Ours are published in full on our case study pages.
You should own your content, your accounts and your data. Be wary of any arrangement that locks them away.

Most underperforming SEO comes down to a short list of repeat offenders.
For most businesses with a product people search for, yes: organic traffic keeps working after the work is done, and it usually costs less per customer over time than paid ads. It is not worth it when the site cannot convert visitors, or when you need results in days.
SEO is an investment with a delay. In the first months you are paying for foundations and momentum, and the returns arrive after that, then compound. The honest way to judge it is by payback: what a new customer is worth to you, how many more customers organic search can send, and how long it takes to get there.
It is a poor fit if you need sales this week (that is what paid search is for), if the site has no clear offer or cannot take an order or a call, or if you are unwilling to let a program run for at least a few months. It is a very good fit if customers already search for what you sell, if you have competitors winning those searches and if you plan to be in business for years.
We start with the numbers: your conversion rate, customer value and realistic traffic potential, so you can judge the return before you commit.
Search behaves differently for a dentist than for a roofer. Our industry pages go deeper on what works for each.
An SEO agency improves how a website performs in search by fixing technical issues, researching what customers search for, optimizing and creating content, and earning links and mentions from other reputable sites. A good one also measures the results in leads and revenue, not just rankings.
Technical fixes and quick wins can show up within weeks. Meaningful ranking and traffic growth usually takes a few months, and highly competitive terms take longer. We set realistic timelines up front and report against them.
Yes. AI answers draw on pages that are crawled, indexed and trusted, which is what SEO produces. Google’s own guidance says the fundamentals still apply to its AI features. SEO is also the base that GEO and AEO build on.
SEO earns rankings and clicks. AEO makes you the direct answer. GEO gets you named and recommended inside AI-generated responses. AISO is the program that audits, tracks and reports all of it. The table above compares them side by side.
Yes. We earn links through outreach, digital PR and genuinely useful content. We don’t buy links or use schemes that put your site at risk, and we are happy to explain exactly where every link came from.
Either. We can hand your team precise, prioritized tickets, or our own developers can implement the fixes directly on Magento, WordPress, Shopify or a custom stack.
Read access to Google Search Console and GA4, access to the website or a developer to work with, and a clear view of your goals and your best customers. We will handle the rest in discovery.
White hat SEO follows search engine guidelines and focuses on genuinely serving users: fast, crawlable sites, useful content and earned links. It is slower to start than shortcuts, and it is the approach that survives algorithm updates.
For most businesses whose customers search for what they sell, yes. Organic traffic keeps working after the effort is done and tends to cost less per customer over time than ads. It is a weaker fit if you need sales this week or your site cannot convert visitors.
Agency and company usually mean the same thing: a team that does the work. A consultant is typically one senior expert who advises and may leave execution to you. We offer both models, depending on what you need.
Look for named people, published case studies, clear reporting and no paid-link schemes. Ask to see how they report and what you will own at the end.
An audit can fix a lot, especially technical problems. But rankings move because competitors keep improving, search engines keep changing and your own site keeps growing, so most businesses that want growth need ongoing work.
Tell us about your site and your goals. We will come back with a plain-spoken view of where you stand and what we would do first.
